MASTERING THE BASICS
Mastering the Basics is an introductory course in Japanese drawing that teaches students not only how to draw, but how to see. Beginning with essential forms such as flowers, the course progresses to traditional subjects like Hannya mask, Koi fish, Snakes, and Dragons. And ultimately leads to the study of composition where students learn to bring together flowers, main subjects, and backgrounds into balanced and meaningful works.
What you'll learn
Five themes. 25 modules.
Built the way Flo learned himself : step by step, no shortcuts. Each theme adds a new layer. By the end you won't just know techniques, you'll understand the logic and structures behind them.
The basics of Flowers
An introduction to painting four iconic Japanese botanical subjects:peony, cherry blossom, maple leaves, and chrysanthemum using traditional ink and brush techniques.
Simple subjects
Four iconic figures from Japanese folklore and nature. Each one a study in character, detail, and the expressive range of ink and brush.
Simple subjects to complex drawing
Build confidence with iconic subjects before stepping into more intricate compositions. From tiger heads and guardian lions to mythical creatures like the Phoenix, Kirin, and Dragon. Each course develops line control, layered detail, and the patience that complex drawing demands.
Master Backgrounds: Supporting the Subject
A great subject needs a great environment. These three courses teach you to build backgrounds that frame, breathe, and elevate without stealing the scene and keeping balance.
Mastering the Basics: Paintings
Everything comes together. Four complete works. From first sketch to finished painting; applying everything learned across the course in full compositions.
